Sydney Road, Manly
Located in a three-story commercial building that had many lives before we arrived. The building laid claim to being a former police station, office building, and at one point had been home to a cinema in the 1960s. The age of the building, limited site access, and heritage façade meant this project would be a challenge from the moment the design process started.
Introducing natural light to all the play areas was the biggest constraint faced. This was overcome by removing the roof sheeting and introducing trafficable skylights to direct light to the floors below. The result proved to be a success. The heritage fabric of the building was uncovered for young enquiring minds to discover the history of the building and provide interesting viewing points through the building for years to come.
