Pine Road, Richlands
Overcoming the heat and reducing direct sunlight into learning areas were the starting points of the design brief at Richlands.
Located in the outer western suburbs of Brisbane, Richlands is a center that enjoys mild winters but faces extreme heat and humidity in the summer months.
The design response was to introduce a covered walkway shaped like a flowing ribbon around the built environment that provided shade to learning areas and reduced the overall heat loads on the building. A byproduct of the design created a flexible space for children to learn in an outdoor classroom in the cooler months and shaded external play space in summer.
